Checkers Unbeaten

Women’s indoor basketball ended for the season last even* ing with the playing of final club games and a fixture be* tween the Canterbury team selected for the national championships and an invitation side. Checkers remained unbeaten by defeating Rangiora, and Brighton proved too strong for the depleted University side. Asserted Superiority CHECKERS 48: S. Rennell 18, S. Sweney 16, D. Entwistle 8, P. Wadsworth 6. RANGIORA 22: L. Rollison 10, J. Kearney 10, M. Paterman 2. Rangiora was successful in bustling the strong Checkers combination early in the first half, and at half-time trained only by four points. However, it soon became obvious that Checkers did not intend to go down in the last game of the season, and with S. Rennell in fine form and S. Sweney controlling play* from the back court, the competition leader forged into a comfortable lead. Disappointing Game BRIGHTON 33: B. Ross 8, H. Hutton 6, B. Strang 6, J. Arcall 7, L. Ward 6. UNIVERSITY 14; N. van Noppen 6. M. Roydhouse 4, L. Sutherland 2, D. Broughton 2. This was a disappointing game, neither side playing to a standard that was expected. Brighton was always in control, but it was only poor shooting from the students that allowed the win to be so convincing. As usual, B. Ross was the driving force behind the Brighton team, and late in the second half she demonstrated her ex-

ceptional long shooting ability. For University. N. van Noppen was spectacular, but was typical of her side when she threw away hard-won possession with unbalanced shooting. Close Tussle CANTERBURY 45: S. Rennell 16. 5. Sweney 13, D. Broughton 8. H. Hutton 5, S. Lee 3. THE REST 41: H. Fellows 17, L. Rollison 12, D. Entwistle 6. C. Brown 4, T. Cook 2. Canterbury was obviously the better-drilled side, but when a practised move failed, and this was often, the players seemed unable to improvise. Because of this The Rest were able to capitalise on numerous mistakes, and with some fine shooting from H. Fellows and L. Rollison, the finish was an exciting affair. Playing in their second games of the evening, S. Sweney and S. Rennell were the backbone of the Canterbury side, but it was pleasing to see the young D. Broughton show so much drive when working the fast break with Rennell. B Grade Tourney (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. Results of the third day’s play in the New Zealand B Grade women’s indoor basketball tournament yesterday were: South Otago 38, Eastern Southland 33; Whangarei 51, Wellington 33; Auckland 40, Otago 14; Mid-Canterbury 55, Palmerston North 27: Nelson 33, Canterbury 26; South Canterbury 26. Wellington 22; Mid-Canterbury 42. South Otago 41; Southland 40. Canterbury 33.
