Troops For Chicago
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SPRINGFIELD (Illinois), August 21. Governor Samuel Shapiro of Hlinois today ordered more than 5000 National Guard troops to active duty for the Democratic Party’s national convention in Chicago next week. The Governor’s order directs that the troops will be used “as may be necessary to aid in preventing civil disorders in the city of Chicago ... in connection with threatened mob disorders that may occur as a result of demonstrations in the city.” The order was issued at the request of the Mayor of Chicago (Mr Richard Daley). The 5649 troops under orders will he on active duty from 8 a.m. this Friday, under the command of Briga-dier-General Richard Dunn, who was in charge of the 6000 National Guardsmen who helped to quell the riots in Chicago after the assassination of Dr Martin Luther King in April.
