South Korean troops and security police intercepted a North Korean Communist commando boat early today and shot dead 12 North Koreans. Two others seriously wounded, were taken prisoner.
Two South Korean troops, one policeman and one civilian were also wounded, two of them seriously. The incident took place near Cheju Island, off the southern coast 300 miles south of Seoul.
The 75-ton high-speed Communist commando boat was to pick up a member of a Communist underground organisation near Sukwipo, a resort town on Cheju, the South Korean News Agency reports. The vessel, with 14 men aboard, carried 14 sub-machine-guns, three radio transmitters, an 83m.m. recoilless rifle, a 12.7m.m. antiaircraft gun, a heavy mach-ine-gun, radar apparatus and a number of hand-grenades.
