PETITION DELAY

Inquiry On Merger

A petition seeking a Local Government Commission inquiry into the desirability of an amalgamation of Heathcote County with the Christchurch City Council’s area was re-submitted to the Internal Affairs Department last week.

The petition, organised by Mr C. C. Steel, a -Cashmere resident, and containing more than 1000 signatures, has been beset by procedure delays. Originally, Mr Steel submitted it tp, the Internal Affairs Department last December; but it was returned because he had failed to comply with provisions for the certification of the correctness of signatures. Mr Steel arranged for those who had collected the signatures to witness their correctness and, in line with a ruling from the department, submitted the petition to the council in April and added more signed forms in June to have them checked against the county electoral roll. This job, complicated by the fact that the council had to work on its 1965 roll, has been completed, and the petition, with annotations by the county clerk (Mr K. D. Stills) has now gone to the department for its consideration.
