EMBASSY INQUIRY
Little New On Tests
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Aug. 19.
The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) said today that the New Zealand Government had asked the French authorities for certain information about the French testing of atomic and nuclear weapons in the Pacific but were able to secure little, if any, information that had not already been published. Mr Holyoake had been asked If the Government had taken any action on a request made by Dr A. M. Finlay (Lab., Waitakere) in Parliament last week for a New Zealand scientist or group to be allowed to investigate the dangers to islanders from the bomb tests. Complaints had been made earlier by Mr C B. Brotherson, a Frenchman from Raiatea Island. Mr Holyoake said the Government could send New Zealand scientists to the French-administered islands only if the French agreed to it.
