Work On Backlog Of Calves Begins
(Hew Zealand Preu Association.)
HAMILTON, August 19. The clearing of the backlog of bobby calves on Waikato farms began today.
About 10,000 are expected to be trucked to the Southdown works during the next four days, but killing will not start until tomorrow.
Striking workers at the Southdown works resumed work this morning, as did those at the Moerewa works in North Auckland. But the calves to be cleared from farms in Waikato this week represent less than
half the number kept on farms during the last few weeks.
The secretary of the Wai-kato-Bay of Plenty Federation of Bobby Calf Pools (Mr R. B. Westwater) said today that arrangements bad been made to collect calves from areas normally served by the Southdown works. He expected the position to be to normal by the end of next week.
