OBITUARY Dr W. E. Griesbach

The death occurred recently in Dunedin of Dr Walter Edwin Griesbach, for many years a leading research worker at the University of Otago Medical School.
Dr Griesbach arrived tn New Zealand in April, 1939, from Hamburg, where he was professor of pharmacology and bead of the Jewish Hospital, and famous as a practising physician. At first on the staff of the physiology department of the Otago Medical School, he later joined Dr H. D. Purves and Mr T. H. Kennedy in research on goitre. This work culminated in the manufacture in Dunedin of a drug for treating toxic goitre, a disorder which had previously required surgery. The successful research of Dr Griesbach was published in 70 scientific papers. Dr Griesbach is survived by his wife.
