Site For Napier Power Station

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Aug. 18.

The Government is reserving 50 acres of farm land at Awatoto, near Napier, as a site for a steam power station, the Minister of Electricity (Mr Shand) announced. A steam power station, probably oil-burning, might be required at Napier in the 1980 s to complement nuclear base load generated elsewhere, he said. The land at Awatoto would probably not be needed for 10 years, but would soon be declared a Ministerial requirement under the Town and Country Planning Act, 1953.
