OIL TANKER DRIVERS

More Benefits Sought Improved fringe benefits for oil tanker drivers, such as travelling time for shift workers and away-from-home bonus, would be sought by the New Zealand Drivers' Union in further conciliation with the employers, said the secretary of the Canterbury union (Mr N. Dunnill) yesterday. Yesterday oil tanker drivers in Christchurch and Timaru held stop-work meetings to discuss action after a break-down in conciliation talks last week.

"The men want the fringe benefits increased,” said Mr Dunnill. “And they want more than the 80c a week payrise offered by the employers, if they can get it” No date had yet been fixed for further conciliation. The drivers had been claiming a rise of about $2.50 a week.
