B. JONES OUT OF OLYMPICS
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The former Canterbury athlete, B. R. E. Jones, has withdrawn from the New Zealand team for the Olympic Games because of a heel injury requiring an operation. Jones, the national threemile champion in 1967 and now doing post-graduate studies in England, had been provisionally selected for the 5000 metres and to gain full selection had to have a run of better than 13min 15sec. However, in a letter to the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association yesterday, Jones said he was
being troubled with a degenerative heel condition which was affecting his training, and that under the circumstances he was unlikely to better the standard set
He said he was naturally disappointed, but grateful for the consideration shown him.
