Williams Construction (Canterbury), Ltd, which built the Madras Street bridge, was awarded the contract for the new Kilmore Street bridge by the Christchurch City Council last evening. The company’s tender, one of six received, was for $115,649. Service Station. Because there could be conflicts between two authorities —the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board and the Motor Spirits Licensing Authority—on applications for permission to establish petrol-selling stations, the council agreed to ask the South Island Local Bodies’ Association to seek a suitable reform by the Government

Patriotic Council,—Cr H. E. Denton was reappointed the council’s representative on the Canterbury Provincial Patriotic Council.

Traffic Signs.—The installation of another 27 stop signs and four give-way signs was approved. This is part of the installation of signs on all secondary roads of the principal road network. Games Appeal.—The council gave $250 to the Canterbury Amateur Sports Federa-

tion’s appeal for funds to send category B competitors to the Olympic Games. Sewage Disposal.—Development in Taylor’s Mistake Road could be permitted, and discharge of septic tank effluent to the sea to the north of Giant’s Nose would not be to the detriment of the bathing waters at Taylor's Mistake, a consultant’s report said.

Standard Fines.—The council will propose to the annual conference of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association that the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) be invited to introduce legislation allowing the payment of standard parking fines direct to local bodies instead of through the Magistrate’s Court.

Airport Cool Store.—The council approved an application to establish a cool store of 1000 sq. ft at Christchurch Airport. The store will be next to the international air cargo building, and space will be sub-let to users other than the lessees. Loan For Land.—The council agreed to seek authority for a loan of $250,000 for

land purchase for roadworks. This will be used to supplement the usual annual land purchase vote, which is insufficient for the purchases envisaged.

Overseas Leave. —Miss M. McPherson, the children’s librarian at the Canterbury Public Library, was granted a year’s leave from November 1 to travel overseas. Miss J. Gillies will act as librarian during Miss McPherson’s absence.

Engineer Appointed.—Mr H. E. Surtees, the council’s traffic engineer since 1959, was appointed assistant (technical) to the City Engineer. There were nine applications from the staff for the position.

Anti-Litter Campaign.—An anti-litter competition in Christchurch schools was approved. Pupils will be invited to submit five brief statements to make them and the public anti-litter conscious, and slogans and designs. Prizes will be awarded for the best statement and the best slogan design from primary and intermediate schools and there will be sitqilar prizes for secondary school entrants.
