Canterbury Wins S.I. Badminton Cup

The Canterbury division 111 badminton team won the Kelvinator Cup when it beat Otago in the South Island final at the V. R. Skellerup Hall on Saturday evening. Canterbury won by 14 matches to two.

Although Canterbury lost only two matches—a men's and a women's singles—four of the matches went to three games and several others were closely fought, it was the ability of the Canterbury team to concentrate until the game was won that gave it an imporant advantage in most matches.

H. Little. Canterbury’s first player in the singles was suffering from a heavy cold but held out for three games before losing to H. Gillian. Gillian deserved his win though, because he managed to blunt Little’s effectiveness by tiring him out in a fast game.

Little combined earlier with J. Lang in the men's doubles and the two fought point for point in the first game to win 18-16. but with that game won. they took the second more comfortably, 15-7.

J. Findlay and M. Berry in the other men’s doubles were losing 8-14 in the first game but with concentration and luck came back to win the game, 17-15. and the match. Findlay also had a difficult game in his singles. He won the first game by two points at setting. lost the second at setting bv three points and clung to his lead in the last game to win 15-11- . _ . Miss J. Peggie had an excellent win over the first Canterburv woman. Miss S. Bruce. Miss Bruce was able to contain her in the first game, but Miss Peggie was too aggressive for her in the second and conceded only one point.

The Canterbury women won their doubles matches easily, conceding only 20 points in the four games. In her singles match, Mrs A. K. Smith was hard pressed in the first two games but she ran away with the third game and the match winning. 8-11, 11-7, 11-1. Results: Men
