OBITUARY Mr R. Johnson
(N.Z. Pres, Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. A well-known figure In racing circles throughout the country. Mr Richmond (Dick) Johnson, died in New Plymouth yesterday. He was aged 93. He was a jockey and trainer until hi, retirement 16 year, ago. Many great horaea of the past have been linked with Mr Johnson. including Rewa Pota, winner of the Wellington Cup, The Swell. Majority, and Brown Derby. According to one old newapaper story he was accredited with having tamed more unruly horse, than any other trainer In New Zealand.
One of the outstanding attainments of Mr Johnson’s career was the win of etablematea, Ned Cuttie and Majority, at the Wellington winter meeting In July, 1939. One report described the dual victory a, bringing to their knee, practically every bookmaker of standing In New Zealand.
