The closing date for entries to the Olympic Games in October has been extended 10 days, the International Olympic Committee advised the Mexican organising committee on Saturday.
A spokesman for the Mexican committee said that the 1.0. C. had sent cables to all national committees advising them that the deadline for entries would be extended until August 26. The entries were scheduled to close on Friday, 112 countries having informed the Mexican organising committee they would send teams to the games. The spokesman said it was expected that some of the 12 countries that had not yet replied to the Mexican invitation would do so within the next few days.
The 12 countries. were Togo, Syria, Surinam, Rhodesia, Nepal, Albania, Dutch Antilles, Cambodia, Dahomey. Honduras, Jordan and Malta. In the case of Rhodesia, the
spokesman said, an invitation had been sent but no reply had been received. However. Rhodesia would be unable to compete as the Mexican Government cannot allow Rhoresian citizens to enter its territory under terms of a recent United Nations ban. South Africa, which accepted Mexico’s invitation, was banned by the 1.0. C. from competing.
