RAILWAY DISPUTE
No Comment On Talks
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 18. Representatives of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants met the Minister of Railways (Mr Gordon) this afternoon but no settlement in the rail dispute had been reached tonight
Neither the Minister nor the society’s secretary (Mr N. A. Collins) would comment tonight on the meeting. Asked if the present partial railway stoppage would be expanded, Mr Collins replied: “That is not known at this stage.” The society’s national council will meet tomorrow.
Today’s meeting was also attended by the Acting General Manager of Railways (Mr J H. O. Tiller) and the president of the A.S.R.S. (Mr R. J. Doherty). The union imposed a ban last week on the handling ot freight for bulk operators after the Government refused an application for a commission of inquiry into pay margins for skilled labourers.
