INANGAHUA FUND BELOW DEMAND
(From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, August 18. A cheque for $2OO from an insurance company staff charity fund and an amount exceeding $3OOO from several Rotary clubs has helped carry the total in the Inangahua earthquake disaster fund to almost $16,000.
In announcing this during the weekend, the Rev. M. Smart, of Reefton, spokesman for the disaster committee, said that applications for help already exceeded $30,000 and these were only a portion of those expected to be made.
“It is already obvious that the fund, unless greatly augmented by further public or Gov-
ernment donations, will be unable to make much impression on the financial difficulties that are so apparent,” said Mr Smart.
“The committee urged people with financial hardships to make their application by the end of August “If people were still not sure of repair costs or other future payments, they should give approximate costs,” said Mr Smart The committee wanted to know these amounts in order to estimate its final requirement Others To Come “It is very difficult to make any large payments when it is known that there are still other applications to come,” said Mr Smart. The applications also indicate the extent of the necessary rehabilitation work. Mr Smart said that farmers should outline repairs to irrigation and drainage systems, dams, stop-banks, and stockyards, the cost of clearing land covered by slips, and the loss on plant and machinery and livestock.
