Two Killed, 12 Wounded (N.Z.P. A.-Reuter —Copyright;
NASSAU (Bahamas), Aug. 18
Two persons were killed and 12 were wounded when police guards aboard a ship returning illegal immigrants from the Bahamas to Haiti opened fire as the Haitians tried to rush the bridge, it was announced today. A Government spokesman said the trouble began when the 210 Haitians, 128 men and 82 women, broke out of the hold on the 560-ton Eastore in an attempt to overthrow the crew and subdue the police guard. The police were forced to open fire in defence of the Government - owned ship, which was off Long Island. In London, a Commonwealth Office spokesman said the Eastore was on a routine trip to deport illegal immigrants. The police were in firm control and there were no plans to send additional help, he added.
