Future Of Westland
Sir, —-Whatever the merits of trading in furniture with Australia, “Survival" is right in maintaining that the Government has a duty to try to offer West Coasters alternative industries. Besides closing down coalmines which were making a loss, the Government has also, this year, closed down a State sawmill which had supplied timber for Government projects since the war and which was making a very handsome profit. Those working it have had to abandon their houses and move to Christchurch. Houses aren’t any cheaper to build on the West Coast, but Government lack of planning has reduced the savings of some who invested in such houses almost to nothing. There must be possible new industries, or branches of old ones, which could be sited at Dobson. Why was the carbide industry scheme abandoned, and should it not be looked at again since devaluation has increased the cost of imported carbide?—Yours, etc., MARK D. SADLER. August 18, 1968.
