Civil War Report

(N.Z P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) HONG KONG, August 16.

A Hong Kong newspaper said today that civil war was raging through the China province of Yunnan, and that Chairman Mao Tse-tung himself had estimated deaths there at more than 80,000.

There was no way of confirming the report which, the “Hong Kong Times,” a pro-nationalist Chinese newspaper, said had come to it from sources inside China. Yunnan Is the vast southwestern province bordering Burma, Laos and North Vietnam.

For years reports have come out of Yunnan that the remnants of Chiang Kai-shek’s pre-1949 nationallist Chinese Army are roaming there. The Communist Chinese themselves have frequently referred to large “Chiang Kai-shek bandit gangs” pillaging and looting in the province.
