Doubt About ‘Confession’
(N Z P A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Aug. 16.
The State Department has expressed doubts about the authenticity of yet another “syping confession” said to have been made by the crew of the American ship Pueblo, which was captured by North Korea in January.
The department’s press officer (Mr Carl Bartch) commented yesterday: “Alleged confessions of this kind are always open to suspicion that if they have been made at all they may not have been made voluntarily.” The official North Korean News Agency, monitored in Hong Kong, said yesterday that at a press conference two days before, the members of the Pueblo crew had admitted responsibility for “criminal acts,” and had apologised. The alleged confessions were the latest in a series said by the North Koreans to have been made by crew members since the intelligence ship and its 83 sailors were captured on January 23.
