Balloon Bid Abandoned
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PERTH, Aug. 16.
Beset with trouble from the outset, the trans-Australia balloon flight attempt by the Royal Australian Air Force officers was abandoned today when their giant silver balloon leaked 25 per cent of its gas after inflation. About 66,000 cubic feet of hydrogen gas had been pumped into the balloon between 4 a.m. and 9 a.m., but a quarter of this had been lost by the time the ballast sandbags were removed. The balloon could have lifted off at that stage, but it was decided to abandon the attempt rather than take the risk of crashing after a short flight No further bid will be made this year, according to an R.A.A.F. spokesman.
