Price Freeze
Sir,—l have just tried to buy an article if clothing and been told by the assistant that they “had them in stock but could not sell because they were at the new price,” which was considerably dearer. The firm, a large one with several branches in Canterbury, is sitting on the goods until the freeze is lifted. They have very little old stock left, but will not sell new stock at old prices, so It is the disappointed customers who are “doing the freeze.” The manufacturer must have charged new prices for this to happen. Is he immune to the freeze? And what about the shop where I bought bird seed during the freeze, one lot at one price, the next 7c dearer because “we received the invoice before they put on the freeze”? It seems to me the retailer Is going to have his increase whichever way the cookie crumbles.—Yours, etc., OUT IN THE COLD. Tirnaru, August 15, 1968.
