There And Here
Sir, —It is probably true that the professional man makes more money in Australia than in New Zealand. But one cannot have it both ways. If tax deductions leave more for the individual to spend, there Is obviously less for the Government. Schools, libraries, all the social services suffer. (It Is ridiculous to uy that they are nearly as good as in New Zealand.) The professional man may have a swimming-pool; but the nonprofessional child has no dental eare. When did any one see a five-year-old with rotten teeth in Christchurch? There are plenty in Adelaide. There are good reasons, other than money, for coming to Australia, but it is no Utopia, it rewards the rich and inevitably, punishes the poor. If enough New Zealanders admire this system they can have it, too, but few would benefit.—Yours, etc., MARY WOODWARD. Adelaide, August 14,1968.
