Silica Sand Plan May Be Dropped

Plans to export Mount Somers silica sand through the Port of Timaru may be dropped.

Mr R. A. Burnett, managing director of Burnetts Motors, Ltd, which was negotiating the proposed contract with an overseas firm, indicated this yesterday when asked to comment on a report from Timaru that the District Commissioner of Works (Mr D. B. Dallas) had said that the roads involved were not designed to carry the loads expected. It had been envisaged that the project would result in an export of 1.2 m tons of sand a year—loo, ooo tons a month —over a period of five years, with the right of renewal of contract. An expenditure of $2.2m by Burnetts was ex--1 pected for the mining equip-

ment and 50 trucks to carry sand 24 hours a day. Mr Dallas said that in his opinion the National Roads Board would not grant a permit for continuous trade. Mr Burnett said the Ministry of Works could “sit and look at their roads” and that this company was no longer interested in mining the sands. The company could make an honest living without a project which was in the national interest.
