'THE “scuffles” between x Frenchmen and All Blacks during the recent series were considered bad enough in this country—but they were nothing, apparently, if compared with a Rugby match in Ceylon earlier this year. The “Ceylon Observer” had a headline, spread over its eight-column back page, on the “Saddest 2 Minutes in History of our Rugby." It referred to a game between the Police and C.H, teams, which developed into a “free-for-all when players from both teams let their tempers get the better of them and threw punches and kicks at each other for two minutes.” The report said that the trouble started when the Police centre started “working his »nns like pistons, punching Davies (an opposing player) in the ribs.” “The saddest part of this brawl,” said the newspaper, “was the conduct of some of the Police players. Discipline is the theme of all policemen and this was sadly lacking in them when they behaved more like thugs than policemen.
