Galilee, now a six-year-old, will be having his first race since winning the Sydney Cup at Randwick on March 27 last year. That win completed the Caulfield - Melbourne - Sydney Cups treble in the same season, a feat never before achieved.
Galilee will clash with the present Australian weight-for-age champion. Winfreux. in the J. J. Liston Stakes over seven furlongs, and a batch of topclass gallopers. including Craftsman. Prominence. Dark Purple, and the New Zealandbred s, Swift General, Future, and Agena. Galilee, Winfreux and Craftsman are the three biggest stake-winners racing in Australia.
Galilee's jockey, J. Miller, said yesterday that the Liston Stakes would be the most vital race of the champion's career. •This will say whether or not he can make a comeback and tackle this year’s cups,” he said.
His trainer. J. B. Cummings, said: “As long as he comes through this one physically sound I won t care greatly if he runs first or last.
“I have not trained him to win the Liston Stakes,” he added, "the big cups are his target.” Cummings will not be at Sandown. He is staying in Adelaide to saddle up 12 horses kt Victoria Park.
