R.N.Z.N.V.R. STRENGTH
Reduction Of 200
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, August 16.
The reduction of the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve from 600 to 400 members to reduce defence expenditure about $50,000 a year was announced today by the Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson). He said the saving would be achieved without seriously affecting the R.N.Z.N.V.R.’s main role—the war-time and emergency provision of additional officers and ratings for general service. “The cut will not affect the peace-time role, which includes taking part in naval control of shipping exercises, fishery protection, and supplementing the R.N.Z.N. by providing manpower when shortages occur,” said Mr Thomson.
The maximum number of paid training days would be reduced from 60 to 20 a year and the maximum number of days of sea training within the latter figure would be reduced to 14 a year for officers and seven a year for ratings.
