Non-alignment Policy Urged
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, August 16.
A policy of positive non-alignment may offer better possibilities for New Zealand than the foreign policy at present being followed, says a report to the Wellington District Methodist Synod, which began its three-day meeting today.
The international affairs committee said in its report that one of the results of New Zealand’s involvement in the Vietnam war was that many people had begun to look closely at this, and at other aspects of the country’s treaty alignments. The report, which has yet to secure synod approval, says a policy of non-align-ment would include: Increased co-operation with Asian nations. Increased trade, aid. and sup port for economic devel opment, with the neces sary social change. A review of such alliances as S.E.A.T.O. A reappraisal of New Zea-
land’s involvement in Vietnam.
The report recommends that such a change be considered by the New Zealand Commission of Churches on International Affairs.
