In-Form Cowdrey Ready For Test

M. C. Cowdrey left no doubt about his fitness to lead England against Australia in the fifth test next week, when he scored 80 not out for Kent in its English county cricket championship match against Surrey yesterday.
Cowdrey, who hit 11 fours in a stay of 3hr 20min, was ably supported by the West Indian all-rounder, J. Shepherd. They put on 142 in 135 minutes for the fifth wicket,

Another test batsman in flne form was T. W. Graveney, who hit a half-century in just under two hours and reached 88 before falling to G. S. Sobers, the Nottinghamshire and West Indies skipper.
K. Shuttleworth, the Lancashire fast-medium bowler, returned a career-best six for 34, and a second-wicket stand of 117 between R. Nicholls (91) and D. Shepherd (59) dominated the Gloucestershire innings against Sussex. Scores:
