Scot’s Eight Birdies
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) HARROGATE.
R. Walker, of Scotland, achieved the rare golfing feat of eight birdies in a remarkable last nine-hole score of 30 in the first round of the Wills £7350 open tournament yesterday. The 25-year-old Scot, who became the youngest player to win the Scottish professional championship in 1961, equalled the ’ three-year-old Pannal course record with a six-under-par 67.
Walker held the lead for six hours until the 36-year-old British Ryder cup player, P. Butler, winner of the French Open title this season, battled his way round in heavy rain to share the lead.
They hold a one-stroke advantage over the Welshman, D. Thomas, the Irishman, V. Hood, and the Englishmen, F. Boobyer and A. Coop. The Australian golfers, S. Peach and F. Phillips, were on 75, eight strokes behind Walker and Butler.
