Schools’ Badminton Won By Malaysian
A 20-year-old Malaysian, Poh Heng Sim (Burnside), won three finals in the secondary schools’ badminton tournament held over three days at the V. R. Skellerup Hall.
Poh Heng Sim surprisingly beat a Canterbury junior representative and finalist in the recent Canterbury championships, S. Thorne (Hillmorton), in his semi-final match.
Pupils from 12 secondary schools and several primary schools took part in the tournament, which was the first held for schools. There were 232 matches played in the three days. The Canterbury girl’s champion, Miss G. Hampton (Avonside) easily won the girl’s title, conceding only nine points. Miss N. Harris and Miss V.
Closey (Aranui) won the girls doubles, and C. Harvey and Poh Heng Sim (Burnside) won the boys double. Results of singles were:
Boys Singles. Semi-finals: Poh Heng Sim (Burnside) beat S Thorne (Hillmorton). 15-12- K Cheah beat J. Ngo (Riccarton).' Poh Hen B Sim beat Cheah, 15-9. Under 15.—Semi-finals: P. Stewart (Burnside) beat N (Aranui), is-4: S. Bryant (Shirley) beat D. Stafford (Shirley). 15-3. Final: Bryant beat Stewart, 15-3. Girls Singles.—Semi-finals. Miss G Hampton (Avonside) beat Miss M. Taylor (Burnside). 11-0; Miss G Mathers (Rangi-Ruru) beat M l *® Mitchell (Avonside). 11-9. Final: Miss Hampton beat Miss Mathers. 11-7.
Under 15.—Semi-finals: Miss A. Ross (North Beach Primary) beat Miss C. Rasmussen (Mairehau). 11-3; Miss N. Harris (Aranui) beat Miss E. Coe <RangiRuru). 11-8. Final: Miss Ross beat Miss Harris. 11-3.
