Golf Course Plan Approved

The plan to establish a golf course in the Harewood region seems certain to be adopted.

The management committee of the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association last night decided to advise the North Canterbury Catchment Board of its intention to take up the lease when it became available. The association would then be in a position to sub-lease the area to a proposed new golf club.

The board had earlier offered the lease of 300 acres to the association so that the land could be developed as a golf course. At a. public meeting last month, support was given to

the proposal and a project committee was appointed to formulate plans for the establishment of a new club. Members of the management committee last night agreed that the opportunity of establishing the course should not be lost. The secretary (Mr G. W. A. Green) said the scheme seemed assured of success through the enthusiastic support of prospective club members. A sub-committee comprising Messrs S. G. H. Rich, G. V. Williams, A. D. Russell, D. H. Lawrence and R. E. Clements was appointed to confer with members of the project committee. The match committee was asked to consider ways of improving the form of inter-club competitions in Canterbury. Delegates to the last annual meeting recommended that no

: alteration should.be made, but i it has since been suggested • that teams should be placed in the various grades on the • results of a preliminary t stroke contest ove” 36 holes. ’ The existing method of grad- > ing is based on the combined . handicaps of the players in each team. Avondale Ready Mr A. C. Barr confirmed • that Avondale would be available for the South Island I championship tournament on August 24 and 25. “We have been rather • anxious about whether the ‘ course would be available,” said the chairman (Mr Rich). Mr Barr said there were , one or two sandy spots on the course but the committee of the club would make a ruling on these lies before the tournament. Entries were very small.

Subject to confirmation by the clubs concerned, the following dates and venues for tournaments next year were fixed:— Canterbury stroke championships, Waitikiri, February 15 and 16; mixed foursomes, Avondale, May 3; men’s foursomes, Waitikiri, May 4; amateur championships, Shirley, October 25, 26, 27; junior championships, Russley, May 24. The dates for the interclub competition matches will be March 9, April 27, May 11, and June 8. February 9 was suggested as the date for the representative team's match against Mid-South Canterbury. The amended course ratings of 67.5 for Greendale and 71 (standard) and 72 (championship) for Waitikiri were approved.
