TROTTING Three Fine Young Pacers In Sprint At Oamaru

Although there will be only nine starters, the Omarama Handicap should provide one of the most interesting races at the Kurow Trotting Club’s annual meeting today at Oamaru. The field includes three promising four-year-olds, Barrhill, Dutch Courage and Waratah.

All three have gone well enough lately at trials to suggest that they will dominate the finish. Barrhill, a disappointing eighth in the Queen’s Birthday Stakes at Ashburton on June 3, at his latest start, showed great promise earlier. He went quite well at the Orari trials a fortnight ago and should give a good account of himself today. Dutch Courage and Waratah won their heats of the 2:18 class pace at the Addington trials on Thursday. Waratahs time was more than two seconds faster than that of Dutch Courage, but the lattah’s time was more than two furlongs was much faster. Dutch Courage looks to be well forward and if the pace is a true one, he could outstay most in the field. Waratab looks likely to show sharp improvement as a result of Thursday’s race. He is a smart pacer quite capable of making a winning run. Chief Walk, a winner at the Orari trials, and Double Step, a good second to Dutch Courage at Addington on Thursday, are expected to do best of the older horses. Neither showed much consistent form last season, although at times they looked capable of further wins. The T.A.B double will be run on the Kurow Cup and Don Memorial Handicap, Seafield Countess and Beat Time forming the likely favourite combination. The on-course double will be run on the Waimate Handicap and the Benmore Handicap.
