Warning To Farmers

There were widespread and persistent reports that some farmers were proposing not to castrate lambs at tailing time this season, Mr W. M. Cleland, general manager of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, Ltd. said yesterday. If this was so, they should be warned that some risks were involved. Under the award, slaughtermen received extra payment for dressing ram lambs. This rate could be double normal rates. If increasing numbers of ram lambs came forward, slaughter costs would be higher and charges might have to be increased. Freezing companies might have to consider making a special charge for any such lambs. There was also the risk, particularly with the older ram lambs, that they would be graded down and might well be rejected for export.
