CYCLING TOUR

N.Z. Rider Leading

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LAUNCESTON.

The 24-year-old New Zealander, K. Manning, leads the four-day “Examiner” amateur cycling tour of Tasmania after yesterday’s opening 125-mile stage.

Manning made a magnificent solo breakaway over the last 16 miles, to finish Imin 49sec ahead of I. Scarfe (New South Wales). His time for the stage was shr 14min ssec. Driving rain and a headwind took a toll on the field, four of the 50 riders withdrawing after two hours.

Of the other New Zealanders, D. Brown, B. McLean and H. Weller are equal thirteenth, three minutes behind Manning, and J. Beere is a further 30sec behind.

The Olympic rider, P. McDermott (Victoria) is third, and the New South Wales rider, D. Watson, fourth. Manning took advantage of a mix-up in which most of the field took a wrong turn. He was first to recover from the confusion and quickly built a lead of 100 yards into more than a mile.

Today’s stage covers 133 miles and includes some stiff hill climbs.
