Motor-car Lights
Sir,—Before Varian J. Wilson condemns as stupid all drivers who drive on sidelights, let me tell him that in London, including the outer suburbs, all traffic drives on sidelights. This adds up to an impressive number of stupid motorist and traffic administrators! Driving in these conditions is much more restful—and safer—than driving with headlights on. The odd new chum who does use his headlights is a confounded nuisance, as bis headlights cannot possibly do him any good but do annoy oncoming traffic. A similar situation applies here on country roads about lighting-up time. There is a period during which one’s own headlights do not In fact light up the road but do cause annoyance to others, and I, for one, welcome the practice of ’’eeping headlights off until they are need? ed. —Yours, etc., UNENLIGHTENED. August 5, 1968.
Sir,—lt is amazing that as many as 90 per cent of socalled courteous drivers should drive their cars without adequate lighting. Overtaking is extremely dangerous when cars coming towards you rely on their sidelights to be seen. Pedestrians must find crossing roads very dangerous, also. I have perfect eyesight but I say that people who drive with their park lights only are a menace.—Yours, etc., SANITY. August 5, 1968.
