Expert Tyre Service

A radial-ply tyre service centre—believed to be the first of its kind in New Zealand—has been opened in Christchurch by the Apex Tyre Retreading Company. The centre is in a new building attached to the company’s existing headquarters at the intersection of Peterborough and Durham Streets.

The design of the centre has been based on the latest overseas developments, and motorists can discuss with the trained technicians the advantages and attributes of radial-ply tyres. Although more and more new cars are appearing with radial-ply tyres as original equipment, many motorists are still unaware of the benefits to be obtained by fitting such tyres. At the new Apex radialply centre motorists can see the different types of radialply tyre on display and compare the different designs. All brands are available from the radial-ply tyre bay. The centre offers other services as well. It will advise on wheel-widening, and can check wheel alignment —something which is vital for long tyre life and pleasant driving. The centre can also balance wheels, and has one of the latest imported balancers for this work. The company takes a pride in its knowledge of tyres, and can cater for all vehicles from the smallest cars to the largest tractors.

The Apex company, the oldest tyre retreading establishment in Christchurch, was bought by the present owners only five years ago. In that time it has come a long way. In 1963, when the company changed hands, the business was moved from the old premises in Victoria Street to a larger building at the comer of Peterborough and Durham Streets. Only a year later a branch was opened at Rangiora in a former joinery shop. The branch was so successful that two years later modern new premises were built in the town, and the blue radioequipped farm tyre service trucks quickly became a familiar sight throughout North Canterbury. The company's headquarters in Christchurch continued to grow, and early this year a farm tyre service was established in Christchurch, based on the Durham Street premises and covering the Banks Peninsula and South Canterbury area.
