$50,000 Winnings
(From the London erepdt. of “The Press") R. J. Charles, richer by £1752 after he shared second place in the British Open and heading for his best financial year, looked back on bis performance with mixed feelings. In the last round, the wind blew stronger and colder and the tough Carnoustie course defied all those who hoped to better or even match par. “It didn’t help me at all,” said Charles. “In the first three rounds my game was really good but today was a bad round. I was very fortunate to score what I did.
“If it wasn't for my chipping and putting it would have been a lot higher—they were as good as I could ever hope them to be ” Charles’s hopes slumped at the third hole when he played three shots in all from two different bunkers and was fortunate to emerge with a two-over-par six—the only time in the four rounds when he scored two-over. “Happening early in the round it was a little unsettling. It knocked me back a bit and from then on I was more or less struggling for the rest of the day,” he said. Charles’s winnings takes his total earnings this year to just over $50,000. With his win in the Canadian Open and sixth place in the United States Open, it has been his best year. He considers his game to be improving marginally. “I guess I’m a little steadier. I have more control over the ball and there aren’t so many bad days,” he said.
