Toys For South Africa
Torro International Toys, Ltd, of Christchurch, had received an order for $75,000 worth of constructional educational toys from South Africa, said Mr K. F. Meates, the firm's managing director, on his return from Durban this week.
The order, he said, would be manufactured by Regent Plastics of Auckland, and would be delivered in July and August. Mr Meates said that Torro Toys had sold $200,000 worth of toys to Australia—and would air-freight 300 cu. ft of toys to Australia each day for a month, from Auckland, starting on July 22. The South African order would be shipped to Durban, said Mr Meates. Some of the order would be railed to Johannesburg and to Cape Town.
Initial orders of toys, he said, had been received from Hong Kong. This had been possible because of the productivity of the firm’s highlymechanised plant in Auckland. Mr Meates said that he planned to visit the United States soon, to consider having his firm’s constructional toys manufactured in America under licence. The firm’s productive capacity was being extended to the fullest to keep up with the growing demand in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Hong Kong. While in South Africa, Mr Meates, received an inquiry for $37,000 worth of motor accessories. The South Africans were keen to buy electrical appliances from New Zealand, including white-ware, providing it was properly promoted and serviced, he said.
