Parking Plan For Today’s Test

Thirty-two traffic officers will be on special duty near Lancaster Park this afternoon to assist traffic before and after the Rugby test between New Zealand and France. The Christchurch City Council’s Traffic Superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) said that spectators travelling to the park by car would greatly assist by following the directions of the traffic officers. There was only limited parking near the park, and motorists would be well advised to park their cars in the inner city area and use the buses which would be running from Cathedral Square to the park at frequent intervals. Parking on both sides of the street would be allowed in Leeds Street, Nursery Road. Hillview Street, Phillips Street, and Charles Street. Motorists would be directed to park facing the same direction on both sides of the streets (as shown on the map). This would be of great assistance in the dispersal of traffic after the match. Off-street parking would be provided in Xavier College and, to a lesser degree, at Phillipstown School and in Stevens Street. “Courtesy in driving and the prompt obedience of directions from traffic officers will mean that vehicles will be moved as quickly as possible,” Mr Thomas said.
