GENERAL NEWS
Take-over
Even hedgehogs can have second thoughts on the adequacy of their winter quarters. One hedgehog, apparently ill prepared for this week’s heavy rain, abandoned a damp Avonhead garden on Thursday afternoon. He shambled up the garden path to the house, rolled himself in a doormat on the bottom step, and went back to sleep. He is still asleep, and the occupant and his family are now using another mat. Omega Site Although no request had been made for the council’s approval if an Omega radio navigation aid station was to be built at Lake Pearson, the council would have to be consulted so that the scheme could be studied in relation to the county planning scheme, said Cr G. E. Wright at a meeting of the Malvern County Council yesterday. First In Two young men were determined to see the Rugby test at Lancaster Park today. They were waiting outside the gates by 9.30 p.m. yesterday in cold, wet weather, prepared to ensure they would be first in line when the gates open at noon. Gardeners’ Queries Readers using the gardeners’ queries service should address their questions to Mr M. Lusty, 32 Brockworth Place, Christchurch 1. (Mr Lusty’s former address was given on the garden page yesterday.)
Ripple Fault
Electric water-heaters over part of Cashmere did not work overnight on Thursday because of a fault in the ripple-control gear, which almost certainly was caused from outside the county area, said the Heathcote County Clerk (Mr K. D. Stills) yesterday. No fault was found in Heathcote controls, and the water - heaters were working normally yesterday. Bastille Day France’s associations with New Zealand will be marked by more than the New Zea-land-French Rugby test at Lancaster Park today. In the evening the local Alliance Francais will celebrate Bastille Day. The French Ambassador to New Zealand (Mr J. F. Duflos) is coming from Wellington to see the football and will attend a reception with the team before going to the French Club’s gathering. The French footballers have also been invited. Christchurch girls will dance the can-can for the visitors.
