Kelloman-Honda In $34 Course Double

<rrom Out Own H«port«r> TRENTHAM. Kelloman and Honda won the Wellington Racing Club’s oncourse double at Trentham yesterday at fairly generous odds for form horses. Supporters of this combination received £34.60 for $l. Honda won the second leg, the Juvenile Handicap, at the expense of the hot favourite Claudius, which just managed to save second. That placing produced a concession double dividend of $3.95. Kelloman’s win in the Corunna Hurdles was a reward for consistency. It followed a third on Saturday and two seconds at hi, previous start,. C. 1 Goss rode Kelloman near the tail of the sevenhorse field for a start and brought him forward on a steady run to lead the chase after Vice Consul going to the last fence. Vice Consul put up a fight to hold his lead and when Kelloman tired badly in the last few strides the lightweight almost managed to recapture his lead. There was only half a neck in it Fifty yards out Kelloman shaped as if he would win by a length. Nice Peter, winner of the corresponding race on Saturday, came from near the tail of the field for third but he made only plodding progress from the home turn, and could not find the speed to get to grips with Kelloman and Vice Consul. Easy For Honda Honda easily outfinished Claudius for a length victory in the Juvenile Handicap .

Honda, a brother of the Hawke's Bay Guineas winner, Bompa, came into the picture strongly in the middle of the track a second or so after Claudius had passed the tiring Lady Defence to reach the lead. Honda went ahead by about half a length at the furlong, and Claudius made a weak response when R. J. Skelton, as a last resort, tried him with the whip. Honda, on* of the speedy Pakistan’s, has now won two races for Messrs B. V. Bodie and D. G. R. Pringle. He is trained by W. G. Ivil, of Tauherenikau, who should be able to place him to further advantage in the spring. The tiring Claudius saved second by half a length from the long-shot, Cantostan, whose finish was impressive. Hi Vita was right up fourth.

Mia, wa, Bfth. and Kip Again, the second favourite, sixth after making only plodding progress in the middle of the track in the last two furlongs. Switch of Tactics A switch in riding tactic* paid off handsomely for High Society in the Lambton Hurdle*. Instead of being ridden in behind as he was on Saturday, when a distant sixth in the Trentham Hurdles, High Society was taken to the front from the start and won unchallenged by six lengths. Apart from High Society’s dashing front-running gallop there was nothing else to distinguish the race contested by a disappointing field of five. High Society is a seven-year-old Red Mars gelding trained at Cambridge by A. D. Whiteman. who developed the brilliant Beyond for hi* hurdling career. High Society went out to a lead of six lengths from Riccarton’s Allegretto in the first half-mile. But by th* time they got to the half-mile Allegretto had lost interest in the chase, and Garnishee and Gladaub were running almost as one, three lengths off th* pace. Gladaub ran into a clear second close to High Society, but put in a bad jump two flights from home. Garnishee headed the chase after High Society from the last flight, but it wa* a hopeless chase. Emsie passed Gladaub close to home to secure third place. Allegretto tailed oft at the Well Related Dark Arrow, a half-brother, by Arragon, to the good winner Picaroon, won the Petone Handicap handily by threequarters of a length from Escameno. Dark Arrow, a four-year-old owned and trained by Mr T. J. Magee, of Tauranga, was responsible for much of the pacemaking, but finished the race wide out on the course with Escameno vainly trying to peg him back. J. A. Messent gave Escameno the run of the race behind Dark Arrow and Lenoman, but his finish lacked the power that would have been necessary for this occasion.

Abbey’s Son came from the middle of the handy-sized field for third, half a length behind Escameno. He outfinished th* tiring Lenoman. Glasge*. the each way favourite, continued a l°®ing “trot” for the top jockey, w. D. Skelton. He finished sixth.
