Good Trial By Whakamoa

"The Press” Special Service HASTINGS. Tho hardy Whakamoa, which won the Hawke's Bay Cup on his last visit to Hastings, showed his fitness for tomorrow's Winter Handicap when he worked impressively on the course proper yesterday morning. Carlynn, a newcomer to steeplechasing, surprised by beating Lucky Rebel in a seven-furlong trial. Carlynn schooled attractively last Tuesday. The course proper, with the trestles 10 fet out, offered perfect going. The ground was cutting out only slightly. Box (J. T. Anderson) worked very easily over a mile, the last six furlongs in Imin 25 4-ssec, and the final three furlongs in 41 4-ssec. Whakamoa (B. Cullen), one of the favourites for the Winter Handicap, ran easily over six furlongs in Imin 24sec, the last three furlongs in 42 3-ssec. Redaire (D. J. Withington), whose best form would make her hard to beat in the Mahora Handicap, ended her work with three furlongs in 42 l-ssec. She disappointed at Wanganui, but has had time to freshen. Humber (R. Stent) and Miss Mod (C H. Mackie) were a long way clear of Agricole (A. T. Jones) In the middle stages of their six-furlong gallop, but Agricole made up considerable ground In the straight. The six furlongs took Imin 19 2-ssec, and the last three 41sec. Lucky Rebel (B. S. Dodds) was beaten by Carlynn (D. Withington) over seven furlongs In Imin 34sec, the last three furlongs in 41sec. Koral (W. Hillis) and Eiffel Tower (W. Sutherland) ran 11 furlongs, the last six furlongs in Imin 24 3-ssoc, and the last three furlongs in 43 2-ssec. Koral is fit for the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase, but it is understood that Eiffel Tower Is a doubtful starter. Gilt Light (W. Hillis), Mosque (E. Lowry), and Ettrick (W. Sutherland) went once round on the course proper, rounding off with three furlongs in 41sec. All three are In hard condition, and should race well.

Boodle (A. T. Jones) ran the last five furlongs of a mile In , Imin lOsec, the last three fur--longs In 43sec. Black Knight (B. Cullen) took 39 4-ssec for ' three furlongs.
