Better Banking Service Urged

(N.Z.P.A. staff correspondent) LONDON, May 15. Britain’s banks are under fire from the National Consumer Council, which wants them to be more flexible in their opening hours and to display their charges at all branches. The council has put forward these suggestions to the Monopolies commission, which is investigating a proposed merger between Barclays, Lloyds and Martin’s Banks. The council says most people are unable to use the banks in their rigid hours of business, and advocates the introduction of a shift system. It recommends that where there is a late shopping night banks should be open until six, seven or eight o’clock at night The council also wants the banks open longer on Saturdays—they now close at noon.

Statue Proposal.—The Britfsn Prime Minister (Mr Harold Wilson) told the House of Commons last night that he would consider a proposal to erect a statue of Sir Winston Churchill in Parliament Square to coincide next year, with the seventieth anniversary of Sir Winston Churchill’s first unsuccessful to enter Parliament.— London, May 15.
