House Sections Scheme For Lake Coleridge

Tentative plans for a subdivision on Murchison Brothers’ land at the Byton River, Lake Coleridge, to make holiday cottage sections were reported on by the health inspector (Mr V. M. Chailies) at a meeting of the Malvern County Council. He urged the council to enforce the minimum by-law standards for building to prevent undesirable development such as had occurred in some holiday settlements. If a large subdivision was planned, a small sewage treatment plant and reticulation

might be an economic service compared with the cost of individual drainage systems.

The Storm.—Ten chains of the water-race through Bumham supplying Ellesmere County had been covered with fallen trees in the recent storm, said the engineer (Mr W. J. Bevis). The race was now being moved to a new route, clear of trees. The Forest Service advised the council to sell its badly-dam-aged Telegraph Road plantation.

Retiring.—He would not seek re-election in October, said Cr W. R. Oliver. A Selwyn riding member for five years, Cr Oliver was before that a member of the old Selwyn County Council since 1947, and its chairman for 11 years.

Hydatid a.—Co-operation from farmers had been high since the start of farm hydatids testing, said the inspector (Mr D. Priest). The change had created renewed interest after growing apathy with strip dosing. Club Help.—“A wonderful eSort,’’ said the chairman (Mr C. O. Redfern) when the clerk (Mr B. W. Perrin) said the Malvern Ladies’ Hockey Club had provided afternoon tea for 488 persons after the opening of the new council chambers. The council authorised payment of 50c a head to the club.

Fire Station.—Use of the old Coalgate railway station as a fire station was proposed by the South Malvern Fire Brigade. The finance committee was asked to investigate. Withdrawn,—An application for a coal prospecting licence for the Russell’s Flat are* had been withdrawn, said Mr Perrin. The council had objected to open-cast working.
