Pa Destroyed

GISBORNE, May 13.

The Awanui Pa at Gisborne was destroyed last night by fire.

The pa was erected about 1840, and had been a centre of local Maori culture since then. Artifacts from it had been removed about two years ago, and stored to await re erection in Gisborne. Eight hundred bales of hay, stored in the building next to the pa, was also destroyed.
