Removal Job For Club

(N.Z. Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 13.

The Wahine will be removed from the Wellington Harbour by the United Kingdom Protecting and Indemnity Club, a mutual insurance group of steamship owners.

No charges will be made to the Union Steam Ship Comnany, owner of the Wahine. The company has, as a member of the club, contributed to the removal of wrecks in various parts of the world. A company official said today that it had not been decided how the work would proceed.

The club was examining tenders received from the various salvage firms to see

how much it would cost to refloat the ship. The Wahine is lying on her side in about 45ft of water. Some 25ft of her has not been affected by seawater and passengers’ baggage in port cabins could be undamaged. The Union Steam Ship Company said all baggage would be returned if possible. If the ship is righted some of the vehicular equipment in the car deck will be salvaged. The Harbourmaster

(Captain R. E. Suckling) said that notice of the removal of the wreck under the Harbours Act had been served. No time limit or method of removal had been stipuated. “We have said in a reasonable time and in a manner satisfactory to the board,” he said.

A suggestion that the board would not permit the hull of the Wahine to be dragged into shallow water was without foundation, he said.
