UNIVERSITY CRECHE

Efforts of a group of young Christchurch mothers to establish a creche at the University of Canterbury have gained support and success.

After a report on their difficulties in getting established was published in “The Press" they were kept busy with inquiries. Six students now use the creche throughout the week, and at least 20 more are expected to leave their children there next year. Initial problems in finding accommodation and finance have been solved by support from the Students’ Association. A male member of the executive is pressing their cause, and they are now absorbed into the association, which is paying two thirds of the costs.

A room in the association’s building has been provided for the children, whose ages range from three years to two months old. The facilities and supervision must conform to Child Welfare Department regulations. There has been some difficulty getting equipment and furnishings, but a cot has been donated and tables and chairs will be provided. Many more toys are needed.

‘Two very capable women look after the children, who are very happy. One supervises in the morning and the other in the afternoon. They are very good with the children, my son is always eagei to go,” said a spokesman for the group, Mrs A. Phillips. “From the response we have had it seems many young mothers have been encouraged to go on with their studies if we had begun last year there would have been more applicants for this year," she said.

The group is getting a for mal organisation into shape and is delegating responsibil ity in various spheres to mem bers.

The main worry now Is accommodation for the increased number of children they will take next year. The Students’ Association is providing as much space as it has available but this may be too cramped.
