Tractor Safety
Sir,—l am greatly interested in the letter from Pat T. Sheehan in which he describes an electronic safety device for tractors. A very efficient device on similar lines was patented by a farmer-inventor in. Ashburton about 20 years ago. It was put though its paces by the inventor and the Industrial Development Department of Canterbury College (which built the prototype), and it passed the test 100 per cent both as regards tipping and rearing. It also stopped tractors overturning when turned too sharply. But the tractor manufacturers were not interested, although patents were secured in the U. and Australia. The patent finally ran out some years ago. This sad end to the inventor's hopes and labours seriously affected his health for years. He advises Mr Sheehan to get in touch with Mr C. J. Crosbie of the Department of Agriculture, Who would bring him up to date. The engineers and inventors have done (and proved) their work. Insurance people could help with loaded and light premiums to suit, and the owners would then be compelled to toe the line—or else!—Yours, etc., 50 YEARS DRIVING. May 9, 1968.
