Foot-And-Mouth Scare
- Sir,—Events and hindsight have shown that the Department of Agriculture overreacted to the Warkworth Incident and whilst your editorial gives adequate justification for this action it is important that better judgment should prevail in future, ft is essential that the department should learn quickly to differentiate between the symptoms of serious disease and whatever happened to the Warkworth pigs. Extreme powers and dreadful bogies must be invoked with great care for in my experience people soon react to reported scares by ignoring them. “Wolf” cried Dr Jamie son at Warkworth —I hope he knows the rest of the fable Not only compensation as defined in the regulation but also for loss of production and rehabilitation must be given to the unfortunate Mr Gibbs and all the others in the future yet to suffer from the predictable fallibility of the experts.—Yours, etc., (Mrs) BETTY VEALE. Westport, May 10, 1968.
